Stem Cell Types

There are several types of stem cells that can be used to treat human illnesses, here are the most common:

Embryonic Stem Cells

Stem Cells from Embryos

Of the varieties, embryonic stem cells are the most controversial because the cells are harvested from a live embryo which typically is destroyed after extracting the stem cells. Adult stem cells, the second type, are harvested from adult humans and therefore are less controversial and umbilical cord stem cells are harvested from umbilical cord blood and placenta shortly after birth.

Embryonic Stem Cells are harvested exclusively from early stage embryos and what makes them so special is they can transform into all 200 plus types of cell tissue found in the body and multiply indefinitely. That means embryonic stem cells can be used for many stem cell treatments including diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Unlike embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells are partially specialized because they are limited in cell tissue transformation. Umbilical cord stem cells are fast becoming the most researched of stem cell types and  have the potential to be just as useful in treating diseases and conditions as embryonic stem cells.
